A cut above

One of the most important things in your sewing equipment (after your sewing machine of course!) has to be your scissors, an expensive purchase initially but one that could last you a lifetime. Let’s take a closer look at the Husqvarna Viking premium range of scissors, all of which have precision honed blade edges for precision cutting and are made of sandblasted nickel chrome plated to improve wear resistance, they are also non-corrosive and easy to clean and all designed with the sewer in mind!

It is essential to have a good pair of cutting out scissors that have a long cut for cutting out your projects, particularly when cutting out patterns. 8-9” scissors are a good starting point particularly for beginners, if you go any longer, they become heavy and difficult to manage. The 8” Bent Trimmers are ideal as they have a bent handle designed to hold the fabric flat, the sharp edge allows you to cut multiple layers.

Next you will certainly have a need for a small pair of scissors with a fine point. The 4” Micro Tip Embroidery scissors are perfect for this application; the extra fine points are great for snipping tiny hard to reach places and trimming thread ends.

I have recently discovered Husqvarna Viking Easy Snips; they have a very small, curved blade allowing you to get as close as you want without snagging or jabbing to your work and eliminate the risk of snipping your fabric. The spring action means they can be used by both right and left-handed people and are perfect for people that struggle to use normal scissors. The Easy Snips are by far my favourite sewing tool and sit right next to my machine!

Depending on the type of sewing you do, you may want to add specialist scissors to your collection. Having ‘embroidery’ in the name doesn’t necessarily mean they are just for embroidery, so don’t dismiss them as scissors usually have many applications.

4” Curved Micro Tip, these are similar to the Micro Top Embroidery scissors I talked about earlier, but they have a small, curved blade rather than a straight blade. The curved blade helps to protect your projects, ideal if you are stitching in a hoop or for trimming thread ends whilst your fabric is under the needle of your machine.

3.5” Curved Embroidery, with the slightly curved extra fine points these scissors are ideal for trimming thread without causing damage to the fabric. They are perfect for trimming jump stitches on hooped embroidery, particularly between small lettering.

6” Double Curved Embroidery, these are ideal for embroidery machine owners, as the angle of the handle allows you to trim threads whilst the hoop is on the machine.

The last pair of scissors I’m going to talk about are 6” DuckBill Appliqué Scissors, a peculiar name for a pair of scissors but if you look at them, I think you’ll see where they get their name from! The ½” duckbill protects the under fabric when you are trimming around an appliqué or are trimming the stabiliser from the back of an embroidery. The lower blade is placed flat on top of the fabric so that the excess fabric can be cut away. If you are a dressmaker, then they are great for cutting close to your seams to remove bulk. These scissors are available in both left and right hand.

I’m going to finish this blog with a word of warning, keep your sewing scissors locked away to avoid anyone using them for anything but sewing and NEVER use your sewing scissors for cutting paper, paper will dull the blades and blunt them, dedicate an old pair of scissors just for cutting paper!

Happy sewing and snipping!
